New Delhi — The Congress has criticised the Centre over its response to the ongoing tensions in West Asia, with senior leader Jairam Ramesh raising concerns about the government’s silence following recent strikes on Iran.
Referring to the developments, Ramesh said there has been no direct condemnation from the government even weeks after the reported military action by the United States and Israel. He described the approach as “moral cowardice,” adding that it reflects a departure from India’s usual diplomatic posture.
Concerns Over Foreign Policy Direction
According to Ramesh, India has traditionally maintained a balanced position in the region, engaging with multiple sides while avoiding clear alignment during conflicts. He suggested that the current response creates uncertainty about whether that approach is changing.
He also mentioned the recent visit of Narendra Modi to Israel, saying it has added to questions about India’s stance. In his view, the absence of a stronger reaction may affect how other countries in the region perceive India’s role.

Economic Impact and Citizen Safety
The Congress also pointed to possible economic implications. Any prolonged instability in the Gulf region could affect energy supplies and pricing, which remain important for India’s economy.
Ramesh further raised the issue of Indian nationals working in the region. With millions living across Gulf countries, he said their safety could become a concern if the situation escalates further.
The Ministry of External Affairs has earlier called for restraint, but opposition leaders argue that the response so far has been limited given the scale of the developments.
Government officials, however, have maintained in previous statements that India’s position is guided by national interest and the need to ensure stability in the region.
Conclusion
The remarks have added to the political debate over India’s foreign policy approach as tensions continue in West Asia. With the situation still evolving, the government’s response is likely to remain under close watch in the coming days.
